Dr. Michael Henning
Dr. Michael Henning is from Atlantic, Iowa and is a 1985 graduate of Iowa State University. After graduating from vet school, Dr. Henning practiced small animal medicine and surgery in Elgin, IL. In 1992, he and Dr. Martz purchased Starch Pet Hospital and University West Pet Clinic and moved to Des Moines. Dr. Henning and his wife have three sons: Curtis, Grant, and Eric. They also have a cat named Gus and a yellow lab named Jenkins. Dr. Henning loves the outdoors and spends his spare time on their farm, gardening, restoring prairie, and creating a wildlife habitat.
Dr. Brian Martz
Dr. Brian Martz has been co-owner of Starch Pet Hospital since August of 1992. He is originally from the Davenport, Iowa area and had previously practiced in the Chicago area for 6 years. He earned his DVM degree from ISU in 1986. His veterinary medical interests include dermatology and surgery. Dr. Martz, and his wife, Suzie, have a daughter named Taylor and a son named Nolan. They also have a French bulldog, Truman. In his spare time, Dr. Martz enjoys spending time with family and following his beloved Cyclones.
Dr. Lori Halligan
Dr. Lori Halligan joined Starch Pet Hospital full-time in January of 2002. She graduated from ISU College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2001. She and her husband live near Bondurant, Iowa with their two children, Amber and Hunter; their dog, Pepper; and two cats. In her free time, Dr. Halligan enjoys spending time with her family and riding her horses, Missy and Peaches.
Dr. Lisa Takes
Dr. Lisa Takes has been with Starch Pet Hospital & University West Pet Clinic since February of 1993. She graduated from ISU Veterinary College in 1991. She has a special interest in small pocket pet and rabbit medicine. Dr. Takes enjoys spending time with her husband, Jon, and their son, Jonny. Her other interests include gardening, antique shopping, and going to the gym. The Takes family has two cats, Rayden and Kramer; two dogs, Foxy and Pickle; and a hamster named Spike.
Dr. Joan Schoon
Dr. Joan Schoon joined Starch Pet Hospital and University West Pet Clinic in February 1997. She graduated from ISU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. She has enjoyed developing her interest in abdominal ultrasounds. Dr. Schoon lives on an acreage which she and her husband share with a donkey, a pony, a flock of chickens, honey bees and several fat cats.
Dr. Heather Kay
Dr. Heather Kay joined the clinic in April of 2007. She graduated from ISU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. In her free time, Dr. Kay enjoys gardening and reading, as well as spending time with her husband, Phil, and their two kids, Emily and Carson. They also have cats, Snickers and S’mores, and their Doberman Pinscher girl Ember!
